E-commerce technology news and research

  iPad usage: an expensive toy?
The bottom line: According to Resolve, 55% of iPad owners or would-be owners see the device as a very expensive toy, or luxury item. It’s not a necessary device to have in your daily life, although it can replace a number of other gadgets or products. Still, that functionality can largely be reproduced (albeit with a less experience, in many cases) by things that many users already own. Video in e-commerce: video only has 5% adoption - but that could change
We've been speaking to Treepodia about videos and are pleased to offer this exciting technology to Screen Pages' clients. Even though the technology is easy now (witness the success of online TV and Youtubee etc), very few retailers deploy video on their websites. Some of the largest (or most innovative) use catwalk videos (such as ASOS), but on average the adoption rate is less than 5%. Posted by 'Screen Pages' on February 26, 2010 in E-commerce technology

PCI/DSS and e-commerce - time is running out
Time is running out for organisations that handle credit card payments to make their systems compliant with a new security standard, experts have warned. In less than one month, the Payment Card Industry, which represents credit card companies, will bring in the PCI Data Security Standard (DSS) to help safeguard customer data. But there are fears that many smaller retailers, in particular, will not be ready for the 30 June deadline and could face fines. Firms with large numbers of transactions are required to monitor closely all access to stored credit card information, and they can be audited quarterly at a cost of up to £10,000 a time to ensure best practice is adhered to. Personalisation on websites cited as next big trend
“The whole paradigm of how the web works will change,” Dave Towers, vice president of e-commerce at apparel company Liz Claiborne, said in a panel discussion titled “State of Online Retailing.” at the National Retail Federation's conference. “The whole notion of the Internet being just reactive will change to proactive and flip retail 100%.” Personalisation, once over-hyped by e-commerce technology vendors, is coming back. "Retailers may have no choice, Taylor added, because consumers have said they want a more personalized online shopping experience. “People want us to know who they are and recommend products." Poor infrastructure costs online retailers £18m
A recent survey from SciVisum reveals the high costs associated with poorly peforming e-commerce websites. Many online retailers look further than the headline hosting costs ("cheap") and the associated headline offering ("24x7"). The real issue, of course, is the availability of solid, reliable monitoring services backed by qualified experts. "84 per cent of web sites perform inconsistently with widely varying response times, timeouts and errors– leaving a large number of consumers at best wondering what to do next, and at worst, unable to complete their purchase successfully.
